Britney Spears Wants Conservatorship to End
After 13 years of being under a conservatorship, Britney Spears just wants it to come to an end.
Since 2008, the “Stronger” hitmaker’s father, Jamie Spears, has been responsible for a majority of her $60-million estate, following his daughter’s heavily publicised personal issues.
Now, appearing via a video-link in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, 23 June, Spears personally appealed to the judge, Brenda Penny, to put an end to her conservatorship once and for all in an impassioned 20-minute speech.
She said: “[My dad] loved the control [he had] to hurt his own daughter, one hundred thousand per cent … my dad and anyone involved in this conservatorship, and my management, who played huge roles in punishing me when I said ‘No’ [to going on tour] … Ma’am, they should be in jail.”
These punishments also included being forced to undergo psychological evaluations and take birth control medication.
The 39-year-old singer added: “I’ve lied and told the whole world I’m okay … I’ve been in denial. I’ve been in shock. I am traumatised … I’m not happy. I can’t sleep. I’m so angry … and I’m depressed. I cry every day.”
To end the conservatorship, Penny said that Spears would need to file an official petition, and that another court hearing would need to be scheduled.
